The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche participates in the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death with an exhibition focused on the influence of the imagery of the Supreme Poet in the vision of artists, architects and illustrators.

At the end of the 1930s, it was the rationalist architects Pietro Lingeri and Giuseppe Terragni who were the first to offer a tangible form of the Divine Comedy in the Danteum: a plastic projection of the work, a memorial tribute that evoked Dante’s main places through large spaces that, through materials and architectural laws, were to express their meaning. A majestic monument conceived for Via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome and never realized, due to the outbreak of World War II. This famous project, illustrated through the original materials conserved in the Lingeri Archive in Milan, which have never been exhibited in their entirety, is put into dialogue in Urbino with the Città Ideale, a masterpiece – also emblematic – of the Italian Renaissance and a key work in the collections of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche.

Together there are about one hundred works by contemporary architects, such as Aimaro Isola, Andrea Branzi, Franco Purini, Carmen Andriani, Matilde Cassani, Yellow Office and Francesco Librizzi, who have reinterpreted the “section” of the Divine Comedy through a series of original drawings. A real journey through contemporary Italian architecture that involves at least three different generations and compares their architectural imagery under the protection of the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino, an archetype of design.
